Have you seen the new Bony XJ47 camera? It has 0.01% better resolution than the current model and scores an amazing 103.42 on the Dpex website!!!

Chasing after the new

So much in the world, and photography especially, is chasing after the newest and “best” stuff. As if you could change your life by getting a new camera. So you rush out, drop a bunch of money and buy the newest only to find it really is not that much better than the one you currently own.

Is the gear holding you back?

The first question when looking at new gear should be is my current gear holding me back? Not one piece of my current camera kit is holding me back. In fact, there are things my Canon 5D mkIV can do that I don’t understand. Just the other day I realized I had no idea the function of one of the buttons on the back of my camera! However, my EF 50mm f/1.4 lens was holding me back some as it was not sharp enough wide open to use at a wedding reception – the 50mm f/1.2 L is.

Can you afford to buy two?

Eric Kim, street photographer, has the Two Camera Rule. Essentially Eric proposes you should not buy any photo gear unless you can afford to buy two with cash. Make Art with What you Have

The picture above was made in 2009 with a digital Rebel Xsi and a EF 50mm f/1.8 lens. You can buy this camera and lens used for around $150! I think it is a beautiful picture and I would be hard pressed to produce a better one with my newer kit. I think you should make art – take pictures – with the gear you have and stop worrying about the newest fad.
