A sunset over Little Lake Butte Des Morts with dark water and clouds

What a beautiful sunset over Little Lake Butte Des Morts! Taken from the Trestle Trail / Friendship Trail in Neenah. This is a low light photo and I used f/2 to get the ISO and shutter speed as reasonable as possible. You can zoom in and see a bit of noise. This was taken with the Canon 7d which was a good camera but not really low noise.

Butte Des Morts means “mound of the dead” so why is the lake named mound of the dead? The Menominee Indians called the lake “small mound” so maybe the French added “dead” to it to make it more dramatic? The lake does fill with blue algae every August from Lake Winnebago. Maybe that is where the death comes from.

I wonder what percentage of lakes in America have a name that has something to do with “death”? A google search for “lake of death” turns up 388,000 hits. So there must be a lot of them. If every other lake in America is a “lake of death” how come lake front property is so expensive?
