Model A and I spent a few FREEZING hours in the snow one evening in December last. The photos show why I love 50mm lenses so much! The picture above was taken with only ambient light – the Christmas lights in the little tree next to her. I stopped down just a bit to f/2 to get more depth to her face and eyes.

So what do I love in this picture? The color is just wonderful. The sharpness – especially her eyes – is awesome. The blur in the little tree and lights is visually pleasing. And I just love the little snowflakes in her hair. Below is a closeup of her face – wonderful!

But there is one more thing. A high aperture lens, like the Canon 50mm L f/1.2, gathers an amazing amount of light in the viewfinder. This really is important at night when a narrower lens would be dark and make it hard to shoot. Yes, mirrorless cameras have the ability to amplify light in the viewfinder and this can mitigate low light issues with a narrower aperture lens. But the cost is lots of noise in the viewfinder and the brightness is artificial and hard on your eyes.

This is why I love bright aperture 50mm lenses!
